Testing the evolution of the DB white dwarf GD 358: First results of a new approach using asteroseismology

چکیده
Aims. We present a new method that investigates the evolutionary history of the pulsating DB white dwarf GD 358 using asteroseismology. This is done considering the internal C/O profile, which describes the relative abundances of carbon and oxygen from the core of the star to its surface. Different evolutionary channels lead to the generation of different C/O profiles, and these affect the pulsation periods. Methods. We used C/O profiles associated with white dwarfs that evolved through binary evolution channels where the progenitor experienced one or two episodes of mass loss during one or two common envelope (CE) phases, and two profiles from single star evolution. We computed models using these different profiles and used a genetic algorithm (GA) to optimize the search in the parameter space in order to find the best-fit to the observed pulsation periods. We used three-parameter models, adjusting the stellar mass (M?), the effective temperature (Te f f ), and the helium mass of the external layer (MHe). Results. Our results suggest that binary evolution profiles may provide a better match to the pulsation periods of GD 358. The best-fit to the observations is obtained using a profile related to an evolutionary history where two episodes of mass loss happen during two CE phases, the first during the RGB (Red Giant Branch) stage. The values obtained are Te f f =24 300 K , M?=0.585 M , and log(MHe/M?)=-5.66. The best-fit model has a mass close to the mean mass for DB white dwarfs found in various works, and a temperature consistent with UV spectra obtained with the IUE satellite.

White Dwarf Asteroseismology and the 12c(α,γ)16o Rate
Due to a new global analysis method, it is now possible to measure the internal composition of pulsating white dwarf stars, even with relatively simple theoretical models. The precise internal mixture of carbon and oxygen is the largest single source of uncertainty in ages derived from white dwarf cosmochronometry, and contains information about the rate of the astrophysically important, but ex...
متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF 3He DIFFUSION ON THE PULSATIONAL SPECTRA OF DBV MODELS
We consider envelopes of DB white dwarfs which are not composed of pure 4He, but rather a mixture of 3He and 4He. Given this assumption, the same diffusive processes which produce a relatively pure H layer overlying a He layer in the DA’s should work to produce a 3He layer overlying a 4He layer in the DB’s. We examine the relevant timescales for diffusion in these objects, and compare them to t...

White dwarf asteroseismology offers the opportunity to probe the structure and composition of stellar objects governed by relatively simple physical principles. The observational requirements of asteroseis-mology have been addressed by the development of the Whole Earth Telescope (WET), but the analytical procedures still need to be refined before this technique can yield the complete physical ...
متن کاملProspects for Measuring Differential Rotation in White Dwarfs Through Asteroseismology
We examine the potential of asteroseismology for exploring the internal rotation of white dwarf stars. Data from global observing campaigns have revealed a wealth of frequencies, some of which show the signature of rotational splitting. Tools developed for helioseismology to use many solar p-mode frequencies for inversion of the rotation rate with depth are adapted to the case of more limited n...
متن کاملA new look at the pulsating DB white dwarf GD 358: Line-of-sight velocity measurements and constraints on model atmospheres
We report on our findings of the bright, pulsating, helium atmosphere white dwarf GD 358, based on time-resolved optical spectrophotometry. We identify 5 real pulsation modes and at least 6 combination modes at frequencies consistent with those found in previous observations. The measured Doppler shifts from our spectra show variations with amplitudes of up to 5.5 km s at the frequencies inferr...
